Why Ignoring Our SEO checklist Will Cost You Time and Sales

Our SEO checklist is only our suggestion and not necessarily those of others. From time to time we may update and or expand on them as the SEO industry is forever changing as so are the recommendations of various search engines around the world.

  • Web design: In today's internet world web design matters. The wrong web design can and most likely cost a company millions of dollars and millions of potential customers. The web design has to be flexible for a variety of devices ie... Androids, iPhones, smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and Business Computers and completely user-friendly for all... This includes not just the normal perse' user but those with physical impairments such as reading, audio, and visual ie... A sidebar dictionary and thesaurus for quick lookup for the reading impaired; an audio / radio unit for the visually impaired; pictures, Infographic(s) and or video for the hearing impaired.

  • Also you should take into account who are target audiences is both geographically and by language. We use this geo tag tool to establish a geo tag. And for those unfamiliar with creating a language hreflang tag this tool may be helpful. Again with setting up the language tag we Again, between web design, geography, and language you can and most likely will miss out on potential customers.

  • Now let's look at which search engine you are optimising for because each one has a set of webmaster guidelines.

  • Setting up your meta tags, Twitter cards and Facebook open graph cards, open graph tags og:tags, schema markups, Dublin Core dc:tags and snippets are your next important step in being found by various search engines. Each carry a certain amount of signifcance and are read by bots, crawlers, spiders, and algorithms regularly.

  • At this point it would be advisable to create a 301 redirect to specify how you want your server and IP to work properly and send visitors to the correct domain. Is your domain is on a normal http or http_secured platform? Is your domain a www or non-www domain? By clarifying this with a mod_rewrite or 301 redirect means now you may save yourself a lot of headaches like duplicate content issues down the road. This is also discussed further down this list under canonicalization. These two should not be construed as one and the same. A 301 redirect is for the domain setup not subdomains, pages, htm, html, php, PDF, zip, or gzip file extensions.

  • Titles and h1 tags & h2 tags are some of the most important pieces of your website pages. Search engines use these to index and rank your information within their query strings. They look at the content after the titles and h-tags for relevancy and quality. A great tool we use is a free online title generator. The basic rule is 55 characters in length will be displayed in search and the rest will be truncated.

  • Meta description tags should be no more than 150 characters. As a general we try to minimize this to two to three short sentences.

  • The keyword Meta tags is not used by Google, Yahoo, or Bing. However, there are still some smaller meta search engines who do. Our general idea is to only use 5 keywords or 3 keyphrases at most. More than that and search engines may perceive as keyword stuffing and or spammy

  • Link and canonical your domain and page(s) preference rather http:// or http_secure - and www or non-www as this will save you numerous hours of headaches and penalties. Google and other search engines could index your site in several different ways from http://www.yourdomain.com/our-seo-checklist to http://www.yourdomain.com/Our-SEO-Checklist to http://yourdomain.com/our-seo-checklist to http://yourdomain.com/Our-SEO-Checklist to http://m.yourdomain.com/our-seo-checklist to http://m.yourdomain.com/Our-SEO-Checklist and so on with http_secured and be penalized for onsite duplication.

  • Three places you should be focusing and using your keywords and or keyphrases should be one: title ; two: h1-tag ; and three: within your content usually 600 words to 1500 words per page. Utilize as many forms of your keyword and or keyphrase as possible to be understood in LSI and yet written understandably for unique and returning visitors. We use the LSI Keyword Generator to quickly find LSI keyphrases. Great Tool!

  • Images and the alt attribute should always be used together. The alt attribute is a very short picture description usually only one to three words. Though this is usually not visible to normal visitors it helps those who are visually impaired. When an image is broke it also helps regular visitors to know what they should have seen.

  • Fully qualified hyperlinks are those that do not have underscores which causes as an example our_SEO_checklist to be read by search engines as ourSEOchecklist, use hypens instead. Secondly hyperlinks that have variant numbers and or symbols should be rewrote to be more explanatory so that not only search engines understand which file they are looking at but so does the user.

  • Pagination is the process of dividing a document into discrete pages, either electronic pages or printed page. By identifying pages from most important to least important via the main pages, next and prev attributes you are helping search engines with the overall structure of your webpages and content strength. This will help you with domain authority and page authority early in your website development and SEO efforts.

  • Sitemaps are not necessarily important on small websites under 50 pages but we still would recommend a HTML sitemap. XML sitemaps are especially helpful when submitting your website details to Google and Bing. The more you update your website the more you should refresh your XML sitemap. If there are webpages which you update daily or weekly set your frequency so search engines will revisit aad review content more often. We use Web-Site-Map.com

  • Before you create your Sitemaps I would strongly recommend creating your Robot.txt and noindex webpages and links you do not wish to have search engines index of what bots from search engines you wish blocked from acquiring certain information. Believe me when we say there are good and bad bots that can drastically effect your website.

  • We also recommend creating an RSS feed to submit your webpages to and blog post to as a content delivery. It can help with your SEO visibility efforts.

  • We also recommend the following 2016 SEO Checklist

    2016 SEO Checklist

This entire checklist can be found at: The ClickMinded 2016 SEO Checklist

  • Have you set up Gmail filters for your new site, or setup a new email address? This isn’t necessary, but always makes things easier.
  • Have you installed Google Analytics? This is not optional!
  • Have you installed Google Search Console? Again, not optional.
  • Have you installed Bing Webmaster Tools? Do this too.
  • Using WordPress? Have you installed Google Analytics by Yoast and Yoast SEO? These plugins will make your life 10x easier.
  • Have you checked Google Webmaster Tools and Copyscape's Siteliner for 404 / 500 errors, duplicate content, missing titles and other technical errors that they may find? Make sure to keep up with any messages Google is sending you.
  • Have you used validator.w3.org and or BrowSEO.net to find even more technical errors? The most common detrimental errors people tend to make are 302 redirects that should be 301 redirects.
  • Have you used Screaming Frog to find broken links, errors, and crawl problems?
  • Have you used Google’s Keyword Planner? Be sure to consider searcher intent and difficulty, pick 1 keyword per page, and you’ll generally want to start with lower-volume keywords first.
  • Have you looked at competitor link profiles? This is the easiest way to get started with link building. This way, you can see what kind of anchor text they’re using, as well as how and where they’ve been getting their links. Something like the SEO Toolbox, ahrefs, Link Diagnosis, Open Site Explorer or Majestic.
  • Have you incorporated your primary keyword (or something close) into your page URL?
  • Are all of your title tags and h-tags ~65 characters or less? Title tags over this will be truncated in results.
  • Another Highly recommended resource is by BruceClayInc.com which is from 2015 but yet it is somewhat a standard within the SEO and marketing industry.
