symbols, punctuation, and pipes in google search

Written by: Published by: on
Recently I was involved in a conversation with some fellow SEO professionals and we were discussing how Google obserses symbols, punctuation, and pipes in google search. The second part of the equation was how do these effect their SERP, search engine results page, when used in the title attribute, head tags, and elsewhere within common text and anchor text.
Most of us that have been around awhile know that Google and other search engines change up from time to time how they do certain things, see certain things, and practice certain things... Life with Google in general from a technical standpoint is always a guessing game of sorts, just as we recently lost images in search results, then we lost authorship.
Once upon a short time ago we didn`t have the hreflang or the rel="alternate" attribute... Another attribute we didn`t have the rel="canonical" attribute.
So with all that in mind the question of using say " slashes, hypens, commas, colons, sem-colons, or other punctuation " in the meta structuring as title and if they had any effect on SEO and SERP.
I somewhat quickly went to Google Search and typed in
  • corn, carrots, tomatoes, green beans, vegitables
  • corn, carrots, tomatoes, green beans / vegitables
  • corn, carrots, tomatoes, green beans - vegitables
  • corn, carrots, tomatoes, green beans : vegitables
  • Then I typed in the same using a "pipe" which is quite normal in titles in SERPs
  • corn, carrots, tomatoes, green beans | vegitables

As you may noticed I only seperated vegitables in each of these to compare results.
Years ago I remember there were similar queries about symbols, punctuation, and pipes in google search and here is one of the most helpful resources dating back to October 2010
