Every search engine have some form of webmaster guidelines that webmasters of websites are expected to follow in order to be listed in their index just as directories. However, directories are not search engines and search engines are not directories.
Search engines are very complexed with many filters, bots, and algorithms as well as many other engineering technologies which we will not address here.
As to these webmaster guidelines they when applied properly allow your website to operate on their search engines correctly. You could somewhat say they are like your vehicle`s operators service manual.
If your website doesn`t function or proform as you want to know why your website isn`t and Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Naver, Baidu and other search engines are like chief machanics... Your web designer, webmaster, and other professionals have to know why as well and fix the issues. The search engines provide a help desk, webmaster tools, and analytics which allow professionals to see and diagnose and correct what is either coded incorrectly or stopped functioning or simply needs to be fixed or updated or upgrade.
The closer you follow their webmaster guidelines and do as they ask the better your website will proform and potentially rank in SERP
